As the Indian women’s cricket team gears up for the T20 World Cup in the UAE, head coach Amol Muzumdar has finally lifted the lid on who will bat at the crucial No. 3 position—Harmanpreet Kaur. The decision, made long before the squad arrived in the UAE, is aimed at giving Harmanpreet the best platform to maximize her power game, after years of batting lower down the order.
Muzumdar revealed that the choice was made during a pre-tournament camp in Bangalore. Despite Harmanpreet’s modest scores in the warm-up matches, Muzumdar assured that her promotion to No. 3 will allow her to set a stronger foundation, enabling her to play more aggressively in the middle overs. "We had already decided back in India, in the camps before we set off for the World Cup," Muzumdar said. "We had a lovely camp in Bangalore. These pre-World Cup matches absolutely stamped that for us."
This move comes after a series of experiments with other players at No. 3, including Dayalan Hemalatha and Sajeevan Sajana. While Yastika Bhatia, once a frontrunner, has returned from injury, she will have to wait for her opportunity, as Harmanpreet has been entrusted with the role.
As India prepares for their opener against New Zealand, the focus will be on Harmanpreet’s ability to bring her explosive style to the top order. Her strike rate of 94.09 in T20Is since 2022 might seem conservative, but batting at No. 3 is expected to give her more time to settle and build an innings.
Apart from batting strategy, Muzumdar also highlighted how the Women’s Premier League (WPL) has significantly bolstered India’s squad depth, especially in discovering new talents. Players like Shreyanka Patil and Radha Yadav, both products of the WPL, have emerged as crucial components of India’s setup. Shreyanka, in particular, has made her mark as a death-bowling specialist and is expected to play a pivotal role in the World Cup.
The WPL has not only given India a stronger bench but also improved overall fitness levels and fielding standards, thanks to structured off-season camps and close monitoring through the Athlete Monitoring System (AMS). Muzumdar emphasized the importance of fielding and fitness, stating that this area has seen tremendous improvement since he took over as coach last December.
