Usman Qadir Retires

Usman Qadir, Pakistan's legspinner, has officially retired from Pakistan cricket. In a heartfelt announcement on social media, the 31-year-old thanked his coaches, teammates, and fans for their support throughout his journey. Qadir, who played one ODI and 25 T20Is for Pakistan, made a significant impact early on in his career, debuting in a T20I series against Zimbabwe and earning the Player of the Series award.

"Today, I am announcing my retirement from Pakistan cricket," Qadir said. "It has been an immense honour to represent my country, and I’m thankful for the support of my coaches and teammates who have been with me every step of the way."

Qadir's cricket journey took many unexpected turns. He initially expressed a desire to play for Australia and even debuted for Western Australia and the Perth Scorchers in 2018. However, his performances were hampered by inconsistency and disciplinary issues. In 2019, after the passing of his legendary father, Abdul Qadir, Usman committed to playing for Pakistan, making his return to the country of his birth.

Despite his bright start, Qadir struggled with consistency throughout his time with Pakistan. His last appearance for the national team was at the 2023 Asian Games. In recent months, Qadir had a strained relationship with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), even accusing the board of mismanaging his injury in May 2023. Nevertheless, his contribution to Pakistan cricket, especially as a legspinner, leaves a lasting legacy.

While Usman Qadir did not clarify his future plans, he stated his commitment to continuing his father’s legacy. "I will be continuing my dad's legacy, embracing both my love for cricket and the lessons he instilled in me. I carry with me the spirit of Pakistan cricket and the cherished memories we created together," Qadir added.
